The Sloped-Lot Problem — and the Opportunity
Much of Silver Beach is hillside. That means many decks here are elevated structures, not patios with railings — and elevation raises the stakes on every framing decision. Footings must reach undisturbed soil on a grade. Posts need engineered bracing. Ledger connections to the house, the single most common failure point in aging Northwest decks, must be bolted and flashed correctly or water will quietly rot the rim joist behind them for years before anyone notices.
Handled well, the slope becomes the best feature of the project: an elevated deck that lifts your outdoor living up into the view, with usable storage or a shaded patio space created underneath. We design for that from the first site visit.
Built for Fir Needles, Lake Damp, and Long Winters
The conifers that shade Silver Beach drop needles all year, and needles that sit on wood decking trap moisture and feed the algae that makes boards slick and black. Between the trees and the moisture rising off the lake, bare cedar here demands honest annual upkeep. That is why most of our Silver Beach clients choose capped composite decking:
- Nothing to stain or seal — needle debris sweeps or blows off a sealed surface
- Textured finishes that keep traction through Bellingham's eight-month wet season
- Hidden fasteners for a clean surface with no popped nails or rust streaks
- Fade-resistant color that handles the sharp summer sun bouncing off the lake
For homeowners committed to real wood, we still build excellent cedar decks — we simply make sure you choose it knowing the maintenance rhythm it demands under this canopy.
Proven Work, Warranted for 25 Years
Alpine Exteriors has completed more than 2,000 projects across northwest Washington, and every deck we build carries our 25-year workmanship warranty on the structure and installation. Railings meet current code, stairs are laid out to feel right underfoot, and the whole assembly is engineered for the specific slope and soil of your lot — not copied from a generic plan.
If your existing deck flexes, shows rot at the posts, or simply looks tired against a view this good, request a free on-site estimate. We will assess the structure honestly — sometimes reinforcement beats replacement — and give you a written price either way.
