The Shake-to-Composite Conversion, Done Properly
Cedar shakes suited Semiahmoo's look, but decades of salt air and damp have pushed many past their service life — curling, splitting, and shedding in windstorms. Simply laying new material over old is not an option, and the conversion involves more than most homeowners expect. Shake roofs were typically installed over skip sheathing (spaced boards), so a proper conversion means re-decking the roof with solid sheathing before anything else goes on. We treat that as an opportunity: a new deck, modern synthetic underlayment, and ice-and-water membrane at eaves and valleys create a far better foundation than the original roof ever had.
For the finished surface, Semiahmoo homeowners typically choose between:
- Architectural asphalt shingles rated for high wind, installed with enhanced nailing patterns
- Designer composite shakes that keep the cedar aesthetic many of the community's covenants favor
- Standing-seam metal, the most durable answer to salt exposure on contemporary designs
- Upgraded ridge and edge systems — the components open-water gusts attack first
Details That Matter on the Spit
Salt air corrodes cheap metal quickly, so we specify corrosion-resistant flashings and fasteners as a matter of course, not as an upgrade. We also pay particular attention to attic ventilation: marine air keeps humidity high even in summer, and a poorly vented attic here will condense moisture against the underside of the deck long before the shingles themselves wear out. Working within Semiahmoo's architectural guidelines is routine for us — we supply the product and color documentation your review process requires and keep the job site presentable in a community where appearance is part of the property value.
Across more than 2,000 completed projects, we have learned that wind-zone roofing succeeds or fails on installation discipline, which is why every Semiahmoo roof we build is backed by a 25-year workmanship warranty in addition to the manufacturer's coverage.
