A well-designed deck is an easy extension of living space, giving you the perfect setting for relaxing or entertaining friends, but what material you choose is crucial to longevity, how much maintenance it will require and appearance. Here’s a look at some popular types:
Previous article: Homebuilding & Renovating+1Better Ho Cedar and Red pine are naturally resistant to decay and insects, have a gorgeous rich warm aesthetic – and cost plenty more than pressure-treated wood besides. They too though need periodic treatments if colour integrity is retained.
Roofing isn’t just about looks—it’s the first line of defense for your home. It protects against moisture, pests, wind, and sun while significantly influencing energy efficiency and resale value. But not all siding is created equal. Here’s what you need to know before making a decision.
Composite Decking: Made from wood fibres and recycled plastics. This type of decking combines durability with a minimum of maintenance. It will not discolour, stain or scratch making it a sensible choice for those homeowners who want their property to last without devoting too much time.
PVC Decking: Made entirely from plastic. PVC decking is impervious to moisture, pests and rot. While lightweight and with an array of colours and grain patterns to choose from, it can be more expensive than other options.
Aluminum Decking: Known for its strength and resistance against rust, decay and rot – it remains cool underfoot. However, because of its industrial look the aesthetics don’t suit all tastes at all.
Great as your deck might look, if not properly maintained, it tends to deteriorate over time. Here are a few crucial steps:
Keep It Clean: Dust your deck periodically, and clear off outdoor debris if left through the night; otherwise it may lead to mold, mildew etc. For a composite deck, use special gentle cleaners that are designed to keep the finish intact.Herald Sun+4Homebuilding & Renovating+4Better Homes & Gardens+4
Regularly sealing and staining: To keep the sun and rain off unweathered, wood decks should get a high-quality sealant or stain that blocks UV light damage.Better Homes & Gardens
Don’t Pressure Wash: Pressure washing can blast off coatings that provide protection from the elements and also tear wood fibers apart. A soft-bristle brush and cleaning products appropriate for use with it are safer substitutes.Homebuilding & Renovating
Keep an Eye Out for Trouble: Loosened boards, popped-up nails, or telltale signs of decay call for immediate attention to prevent further damage.
Guided by a much more vibrant and resilient community, Lynden, Washington in Whatcom County: A pictorial history.HistoryLink+2Whatcom Local+2HistoryLink+2
Lynden’s history began with an Indian village of Nooksack people standing on the site. Europeans soon began arriving in the mid-19th century, and they found fertile lin and opportunity. Among the men whom they were quick to leave were Phoebe and Holden Judson who started Lynden–Phoebe was responsible for the name. Having read Thomas Campbell’’ Hohenlinden, she took its spelling but changed it in an effort to make it look more aesthetic.Whatcom Local+1HistoryLink+1
The late nine-teentth and early twentieth centuries attracted a large flow of Dutch immigrants who had been lured to this area by the rich agricultural soils. This group of settlers had a great impact on the physical and social landscape of Lynden. They built institutions such as the Christian Reformed Church in 1900, then opened Lynden Christian School four years later, forming a community based in faith that was tightly knit culturally. Even today, evidence of the Dutch heritage can be found throughout the region’s buildings, businesses, and cultural events. HistoryLink+1Whatcom Local+1
W. H.`Billy’ Waples opened the Lynden Department Store in 1897–just as it was emerging from this difficult period. Going from a small dry goods store to become one of the most successful department stores in all of Western Washington symbolized Lynden’s commercial vitality. This success is largely due to Waples’ innovative sales techniques and widespread participation in the community. HistoryLink
Today Lynden has successfully incorporated its past into the present. Events such as Northwest Washington Fair are deeply colored by the town’s Dutch roots and Lynden still stands for high community values, where close community feeling and agricultural prosperity go hand in. Lopez Island has a rich history marked by early settlement, industrial growth, and cultural development. Each phase has shaped its community and environment.
The first permanent European American settlers came to Lopez Island in the mid-1800s, attracted by its fertile farmland and fish-endowed coastlines. These early settlers were mainly drawn from Scandinavia. Britain’s many isles the Pacific Northwest then in vogue amongst transatlantic migrants of that era, though they hailed from other origins too Music could still be heard loudly resonating through open doorways on those peaceful trips home from mainland America’s distant ports!ares from the mainland brought the piano tentatively out of difficult silence. As people settled in fresh cement places like McMillanville and Richardson, life would continue rhythmically growing around a jail cell for the wife-rapist of Andersen’s ‘Widow On Hyacinth Street’ who once hitched up with someone else’s father to make little fuzz men together near open flumesagons heated hot numbers spewing from gas-powered generators hidden under their floor joists together.
Unlike other parts of Washington, Lopez Island did not see the heavy industrialization that it experienced there. But, the island did develop industries which were particularly suited to its geographical characteristics and resources. The basis was agriculture, especially sheep raising, which flourished throughout the latter half of the 19th century into first half of twentieth. Wool and mutton were sent off to markets away from the island, an offshoot perhaps being that for a time Lopez had a name brand sheep. Logging also of course played a significant role in early economy, with dense forests producing timber for everything one might wish to build from homes and boats upwards.
Fishing and canning represented two of the larger industries, coming into there own especially as the twentieth century got under way and salmon populations held up so well all round this area. On the edge of many beaches grew-up a number of fish processing plants. Because in those days it was hard to get across to the island at all without taking a ferry, it needed the tourist industry to open up and provide new opportunities for economic development local trades: hotels, lodgings and other services emerged.
A unique cultural image is formed by the natural environment, group values and many influences that bring Lopez island together where today it has become known for its laid-back atmosphere and friendly locals–so much so in fact that its earned the nickname” The Friendly Isle.”this reputation is based at least partly on a local tradition, which is for each driver to wave at those he meets on the road; it just a small, yet telling, island custom.
On the island, creators also rub shoulders. In the 1960s and 1970s, people came to Lopez as part of a broader countercultural movement. They promoted sustainability, self-sufficiency, and artistic self-expression. Today, the island hosts several art galleries, music festivals, and literary events that attract both residents and visitors.
Lopez Island has a variety of siding options, reflecting its unique climate and style preferences. Many homeowners choose materials based on durability, aesthetics, and local availability.
The wood that covers buildings on Lopez Island serves as a solid testament to tradition, sustainability, and natural beauty. The most common wooden roofing materials are shakes and shingles. Cedar is plentiful in the Pacific NW and naturally resistant to moisture, decay and insect damage, making it perfect for the island’s wet climate. Cedar shakes are thicker and have more texture than shingles, giving homes their rustic appearance. Shingles look smoother and more polished.
On a quest to revive traditional wooden building techniques, our carpenters crafted several dip-fashion shiplapped clapboards. These horizontal wooden planks, while more commonly used for siding, were also traditionally employed in some architectural heritages as a roofing material. They are visually appealing and authentic, therefore attractive for restoration or cultural projects.
Brick and Stone Veneer Full brick or stone construction can be highly impractical and expensive for most homes in Lopez Island, especially in the countryside. The obvious choice is to combine the two: brick and stone veneers offer a multilayered decorative style that is both rich and visually striking. At the same time they provide superb structural efficiency.
These materials are widely used for siding accents, chimneys and facades but on occasion they appear in ornamental rooftop (parapets or mansard roofing).
Stone veneer, often made from slate or manufactured stone, gives a home a rugged and timeless look that blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings of Lopez Island. It’s being used especially in custom or high-end homes trying to achieve lodge or craftsman aesthetics. Brick veneer, on the other hand, provides a classic appearance with uniform coloring and may be patterned to echo Georgian colonial or Tudor styles.
Vinyl and Fiber Cement Options Nowadays a combination of value, durability and low maintenance is sought by those who live on Lopez Island. Hence vinyl and fiber cement sidings enjoy increasing popularity. Although these have not traditionally been used as roofing materials both vinyl and fiber-cement plates are integral to the roofing envelope and frequently elected to match roofing systems as well as protect the upper part of facades, for instance those containing dormers and gables.
The lightweight vinyl siding is water-resistant and is available in all sorts of colors and textures, including ones that look like wood grain. It requires minimal maintenance and is able to takes the island’s wet climate without warping or rotting. However, its artificial look will not endear it to homeowners who are seeking for something a little more natural or elegant.
