The choice of decking material affects how long your deck will last and how much maintenance it requires. Here are some popular ones.
Natural Wood Decking: Natural wood decks have always been popular because people like their warm color and genuine appearance. Common types are decay-resistant cedar, redwood and tropical hardwoods like Ipe, which is of particular interest to someone in the market for high-quality yet economical timber. Despite a classic appearance, they need regular care such as painting or varnishing in order to combat weathering and decay.Better Homes & Gardens+2Forbes+2Consumer Reports+2Architectural Digest+1Forbes+1
Window isn’t just about looks—it’s the first line of defense for your home. It protects against moisture, pests, wind, and sun while significantly influencing energy efficiency and resale value. But not all siding is created equal. Here’s what you need to know before making a decision.
Pressure-Treated Wood: This type of timber has had chemicals forced into it to fight off insects and fungus, making it relatively inexpensive and long-lasting as far as durability goes. But just because a piece is treated doesn’t mean that it won’t twist as time goes by (which causes other problems). Make sure to keep up the maintenance on your pressure treated-wood surfaces so they look good and can bear loads as needed.Homebuilding & Renovating+9Trex Company, Inc+9This Old House+9
Composite Decking: This wood fiber-plastic composite decking looks like wood but doesn’t need extensive maintenance. Its high resistance to decay, rotting and warping make it long-lasting and virtually maintenance and it is available in many colors and textures. Although the initial cost is more than with pure wood decks, its lack of maintainence means that over time it can work out cheaper than pure wood.Architecture Lab+3Trex Company, Inc+3Legacy Decks+3This Old House
PVC decking is made from plastic, which means that it resists insects, moisture and rot. Deck colors include those in every hue the rainbows impart to rain-drenched forest, with natural sunlight causing boards to glisten from all angles. However it may lack the natural appeal and beauty of wood, so it is typically more expensive than other materials available on market today.

Your deck design should ideally complement the architecture of the house as well as its use. Here are a few options:
Attached Decks: These ‘extensions’ of your home are actually connected to it. You can use them as an outdoor dining space or entertaining room, with seamless transitions from your living area to the out-of-doors.
Detached Decks: Also known as island decks or stand-alone structures, they can be placed anywhere on your property. They can be designed for privacy or to make a statement in the garden and provide shelter from sun and wind.
Wraparound Decks: Surrounding your home, in addition to increasing your outdoor floor space and offering multiple ways in and out, they are the perfect addition to any house with a pretty view.
Multi-Level Decks: This kind of deck fits very well in sloping areas, creating specific spaces for various activities. They not only add a lot of interest to your property line but also define areas to walk or gather for different purposes such as dining tables, chaises lounges, and general lawn chairs.Forbes+11Realtor+11Architectural Digest+11
Pool Decks: These decks are specifically designed around swimming pools, and provide a slip-resistant and safe surface. Composite decking is recommended material for use near water because it is highly durable and will not absorb moisture.Legacy Decks+2Homebuilding & Renovating+2Better Homes & Gardens+2

Lynden, a city steeped in tradition and culture. History is written in every corner, with something as simple as the most common streetlight paint color telling a story of its own. The city began on the acreage belonging to two farmers Phoebe and Holden Judson who came from Ohio in April 1870. Throughout its development Lynden has been ruled by the Dutch, visible in architecture and festival. It started with its fiscal bottom line drawn from logs. Whatcom Falls has a rich history marked by early settlement, industrial growth, and cultural development. Each phase has shaped its community and environment.
Beginning in the 1850s, people began to settle near Whatcom Falls in earnest. In the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush of 1858, Washington and Canada were flooded with settlers. As the vast wilderness was explored, others discovered this region’s potential for permanent habitation. Fortunes were to be made from its rich timber (white spruce and Douglas fir), fertile soil on its lowland flats for farming or gardening purposes–just about anything that could grow in such an environment–and fishing near the mouth of Whatcom Creek. The falls also offered an excellent site from which to establish sawmills and harness water power. Whatcom became a bustling town–eventually merged into the modern Bellingham–with abundant exports of lumber. Its settlers built bridges across Whatcom Creek, soon to be of real economic and social value.
Industrial development in the Whatcom creek section was closely related to natural resources, which had caught people’s eye from the outset. By the end of the 19th century, lumbering had become the predominant industry in local economy. The ridge tops that ridge the region were clearcut for massive old growth forests. Along Whatcom Creek, for example, mills sprang up to process that primeval timber immigration. Vast amounts were sent down the creek where mills were driven by its constant flow. As industrialization spread, the Northern Pacific Railroad extended its branch lines into Bellingham. There was a corresponding increase in forest products, coal and fish exported to other parts of the United States and overseas.
Culturally and socially, the Whatcom Falls region has experienced an evolution that is rich from its earliest days until now. To begin with, the settlers were preoccupied with survival and building communities from scratch. With all the hardships suffered, though, they came together in religious societies, school-houses and town meetings so that at least a sharing could be had about their labours. As the economy stabilized cultural life was on the up. Reflecting a national trend toward urban beautification and public recreation, Whatcom Falls Park was established in 1908. The public rallied to preserve its natural beauty—omnipresent reminders of an age when quality of life was treasured as much as traditional industrial values. Throughout the 20th century,
Whatcom Falls has a variety of siding options, reflecting its unique climate and style preferences. Many homeowners choose materials based on durability, aesthetics, and local availability.
Wood window frames have been what made homes in Whatcom Falls different from others, bringing life with its natural use and colloids into residential design. Traditionally, homes with cedar shake siding matched rich wooden-framed windows that seamlessly blended in with the country look. Cedar could be found in plenty in this part of the Pacific Northwest. It was used widely for this reason, not just on houses but also in terms of providing the frame for durability and right-touch appearance.
As cultural trends developed further, so did the wooden windows. Over time, as clapboard siding became fashionable, wood windows also adapted to reflect this trend in British-American style and decoration.
Brick veneer has long been appealing. Suitable for a variety of architectural angles, from Colonial revivals or Craftsman bungalows, is found widely in Whatcom Falls houses. Brick appeals because of its down-to-earth coloration, resistance to rain, and minimal maintenance costs and time all worth noting in this rainy area of the country.
On the other hand, stone veneer provides a natural, rough-hewn look for properties. Whether it is ledgestone, fieldstone or river rock brinishes, the stoenv’s simple ores mix well with surrounding woods and hills of this waterfall country. Advances in veneer technology produce realistic textures and color variations almost indistinguishable from the actual rock, enhancing street appeal yet giving good resistance to damp or freeze-hard rains.
People in Whatcom Falls tend to install vinyl and fiber cement to satisfy their siding and window requirements, as the materials are sturdy and easy to maintain. Vinyl windows and siding are considered economical and good at keeping out water a very necessary feature in an area known for heavy rain and humidity. Vinyls now come in many colors and textures just one short of nature can provide, even imitating the grain of wood, so people can have both looks with modern performance. ]]Fiber cement stands out to those who want the advantages of both: a material that looks like wood or masonry but that doesn’t rot, attract pests, or burn. With brands like James Hardie building popular acceptance for fiber cement products with planks, panels, and trim work that stays beautiful for years but requires only minimal upkeep, the business really is turning around to favor this new material. Moreover, fiber cement stands up very well indeed to the challenges it has in climate changes of freeze and thaw cycles, whether or not the corrosive sea breeze from the Pacific Ocean.
