New Windows for Sunnyland's Bungalow Blocks

Sunnyland's grid of streets north of downtown Bellingham is bungalow country — early-twentieth-century cottages and craftsman-influenced homes on friendly lots, many still carrying their original wood windows a hundred years on. Those old double-hungs have charm, but ask anyone heating a Sunnyland home through January: single-pane glass and sash-weight pockets leak warmth like an open door. Alpine Exteriors has replaced windows throughout Bellingham's older neighborhoods across 25 years in business, and Sunnyland's housing stock is squarely in our wheelhouse.

What we do

Alpine siding, roofing, windows & decking.

The Sunnyland Window Situation, Honestly Assessed

Most homes here fall into one of three patterns. Some retain nearly all their original wood sashes — drafty, single-glazed, often painted shut, but dimensionally intact. Others got partial upgrades over the decades: a few aluminum sliders from the 1970s, a vinyl unit or two from the 1990s, creating a mismatched facade and uneven comfort room to room. A third group had whole-house vinyl replacements done cheaply, with insert frames that shrank the glass area and are themselves now failing — fogged panes, yellowed frames, stiff sashes.

Each starting point calls for a different plan, which is why we assess opening by opening rather than quoting a per-window flat rate that ignores what your house actually needs. Original frames with sound sills may take insert replacements that preserve interior casings. Rotted or badly altered openings need full-frame replacement with new flashing. A hodgepodge facade may be worth unifying entirely.

What You Gain Where It Counts

Bellingham's marine climate makes window performance about more than the heating bill:

  • Warm glass surfaces — Low-E double glazing ends the winter condensation that soaks bungalow sills and feeds mold in window troughs
  • Real ventilation again — sashes that open easily matter in older homes that rely on windows for summer cooling and year-round air exchange
  • Quieter rooms — modern glazing takes the edge off traffic noise from the busier streets bordering the neighborhood
  • Character kept — grille patterns, proportions, and exterior trim details matched to the bungalow era, not erased by it

We insulate the old sash-weight pockets during installation — a hidden cavity that, left empty, keeps bleeding heat no matter how good the new window is. Details like that are why the work carries our 25-year workmanship warranty.
