The Short Answer

In a climate as consistently wet as ours, fiber cement is the better default choice for most homes in Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine and Birch Bay. It shrugs off the moisture, moss and algae that our long rainy stretches produce, and it holds paint far longer than wood. Cedar still has a real place here, though — on homes where the owner values the natural grain and warmth of real wood over decades-long low maintenance, and is willing to keep up with the finish schedule that wood siding demands in a marine climate. Neither product is wrong; they're built for different priorities.

Option A: Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement is a blend of cement, sand and cellulose fiber, pressed into planks or panels and factory-primed or pre-finished.
